Leading producer of coated fabrics and films completes first phase of Canadian national joint research program dedicated to industrial innovation

CAMBRIDGE, ONTARIO | Canadian General-Tower Ltd. (CGT), a leading provider of coated fabric and film products and solutions, is proud to have completed the first phase in a joint research program with McGill University to develop the next generation of biodegradable green plasticizers for industrial applications.

The research partnership, through the university’s MITACS Research and Innovation program, provides funding to support industrial and social innovation in Canada.

CGT, a leader in global sustainability through smart product development and design, is conducting scale-up trials to qualify the industry’s new plasticizers.

Craig Richardson, CEO, says “CGT is honoured to be part of an important joint research initiative aimed at bringing new industrial material innovations to the Canadian market while championing environmental responsibility.”

“This is also a momentous year for CGT because the company celebrates 150 years of cutting-edge innovation and we look forward to a future of providing excellent service and to our global customers,” he says.

“McGill’s research and training partnership with Mitacs creates a winning combination for the University and for Canadian companies like Canada General-Tower,” said Sylvain Coulombe, Associate Vice-Principal, Innovation and Partnerships. “The Mitacs Accelerate projects with CGT will advance research on the development of green and non-toxic materials, while also giving McGill’s students and post-doctoral fellows the opportunity to apply their science and engineering training in support of industrial innovation in Canada.”

Based in Cambridge, Ontario, CGT’s innovations in surface materials for the automotive, pool, and industrial construction industries are backed by initiatives in sustainable design and waste reduction as part of its ongoing commitment to corporate social responsibility.

The company diverts production scraps for re-use in its manufacturing processes. At CGT’s Cambridge facility, up to 4 million pounds of PVC material is recycled in industrial applications per year. The company also has in-house solvent recycling capabilities to reduce the purchase of new solvents and increase the use of reclaimed solvents in its manufacturing processes.

Founded in 1869, CGT originally produced wagon wheels and axe handles. The company now delivers high-tech, high-quality products to a variety of industries. Manufacturing innovative building products, automotive interior solutions, and pool liners; the company serves a global customer base. The automotive industry is the company’s largest market.

In collaboration with its 1,200+ global employees, CGT is organizing a series of milestone events, open houses, and local initiatives to help share its hallmark year with its global community of customers, suppliers and partners.
