CGT Fields Grand Opening!

JUNE, 2019

The big day has come and gone! On Saturday, June 22, we continued our 150th Anniversary celebrations with the grand opening of CGT Fields, formerly Waterworks Park.

CGT worked closely with the City of Cambridge to restore this beautiful landmark. Baseball fields are a place where communities gather, learn good sportsmanship, team building skills and leadership. We couldn’t think of any better way to celebrate 150 years than by doing something for our community within our own backyard!

Read on for some highlights from the Grand Opening of CGT Fields.

Opening ceremony

The day kicked off with an opening ceremony at the brand new CGT Fields, hosted by the Director of Human Resources & Labour Relations, Helga Wybrow, followed by a welcome speech by our owner, Eve Heersink. CGT Staff and event goers were also joined by special guests and dignitaries including MP Bryan May, MPP Belinda Karahalios, Regional Chair Karen Redman, Mayor Kathryn McGarry, Ward 8 Councillor Nicholas Ermeta, and Director of Baseball Ontario, Mary Ann Smith.

The ball game

After the opening ceremony, the Harbourtown Sound Chorus barbershop quartet got the audience ready for a good ol’ fashioned game of baseball by singing the classic tune “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.” The attendees were then able to see to the Cambridge Cubs bat against the Kitchener Panthers in what was the very first baseball game played in the newly restored park. The first pitch was shared by three minor league players, and three special guests: Chad Dube, Mayor McGarry, and a CGT staff member.

Post game games

After the game, CGT staff, neighbours, and minor league players headed over to the CGT lot for family-friendly activities, face-painting and balloon animals — all the while enjoying the sounds of the Harbourtown Sound Chorus while they feasted on delicious bites from the food trucks provided by Bingemans and Crazy Cravings Express.

Another exciting addition to the day was the display of an original Model T from 1914, a significant part of CGT’s history as the roof liner of that vehicle was the first product we supplied to the automotive market. Sitting beside it was a luxurious Lincoln Navigator with CGT’s latest work on display on the interior, showing how far automotive technology has come in the last 105 years.

Overall, the celebration was a huge success. A big thank you to everyone who joined in on the day’s festivities. We owe 150 years to the community, and hope to celebrate 150 more!
