Celebrating CGT's 150th Anniversary!

JANUARY 23rd, 2019

On July 1, 1867, the Canadian colonies united in a confederation, laying the groundwork for the creation of Canada. Two years later, in 1869, Victoria Wheel Works in Galt, Ontario began making wagon wheels and axe handles.

In 2017, Canada celebrated its 150th anniversary. With its global headquarters still located on this original site, the company that sprang from Victoria Wheel Works, Canadian General-Tower Limited (CGT), celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2019.

A History of a Nation and Innovation

One of Canada’s oldest privately held businesses, CGT has been shaped by the forces of history, the vision of its leadership and the dedication of its employees.

Wagon wheels gave way to oilskin clothing that protected farmers, miners, fishermen, firemen and workers of all kinds from the elements. Then came rubber manufacturing as Southern Ontario entered the industrial revolution.

Proving that the only constant in history is change, CGT endured and evolved in response to the First World War, Great Depression and Second World War.

The prosperity of the post-war years brought consumer goods, including vinyl tablecloths, wall coverings and shower curtains. Modernization and globalization led to automotive solutions, pool liners and building products.

A Global Leader

Now one of the world’s leading producers of coated fabrics and films and employer to more than 1,200 employees in manufacturing and sales facilities around the globe, CGT celebrates its resilience, ingenuity and dedication to craftsmanship.

“Since 1869, CGT has been defined by people who bring the highest levels of technology and innovation together for a variety of applications. As we celebrate our sesquicentennial, we also celebrate the people of CGT — past, present and future,” says CGT CEO Craig Richardson.

Celebrating 150 Years!

CGT plans to mark this historic occasion with current employees, past employees, supply partners and global customers through a number of planned celebrations, open houses and commemorative events.
